Be Careful Who You Listen To

Matt Richards

1 Kings 13:16-18 And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, for it was said to me by the word of the LORD, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’” And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him. So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.

This is such a tragic tragic story. I am so glad we don't live in the Old Testament. This is one of my least favourite and one of the most disturbing stories in the Word.

God had clearly spoken to this prophet. Given him a word not to stop what he was doing, but to hurry in his journey and get home.

Another dude says to him come to my house, have some food and chill. He then told him, I just can't because God told me not to. The dude then lied and said, hey I'm a prophet too and God told me you can come.

So the prophet stayed there and consequently the guy that lied then prophesied to him about his disobedience and pending judgement. The guy that's been deceived goes outside and gets killed by a lion.

Man this story is savage. I hate it. Seems so unfair. I want the lying prophet to be punished.

But you know God can speak to you clearly about something. You might even be obeying God being about His business. Being on the right path.

Then the devil will send a voice "did God really say that; and then claims to over-ride your original word and you end up disobedient and dead.

You see the danger was the prophet accepted the new word he was given because the guy was 'spiritual.'

Be aware of 'hyper-spiritual' people that seem to have words for everyone and everything. Test those words. Don't let just anyone speak into your life, and if they do then weigh that word.

You see you need to hear from God yourself and check it out to the authenticity of the bible.

I could give story after story where someone gave a so called 'spiritual' word and the person became shipwrecked because of believing a lie. (Even if well-meaning) I have some real bad, sad stories.

A 'hyper- grace' message today will tell you that you don't have to listen to the bible and that everything is okay without repentance; but that word to just chill leads to death.

Be careful who you listen to. It's life and death friend.

Prayer:

Father forgive me for listening to lying voices saying it's going to be okay if I don't change. I thank You, You have already spoken and I choose to be obedient to what You have said. I ask for discernment that I might be careful who I listen to in Jesus' name, Amen.
