Toxic Roots (Part 2)

Matt Richards

Hebrews 12:15 Exercise foresight and be on the watch to look [after one another], to see that no one falls back from and fails to secure God’s grace (His unmerited favor and spiritual blessing), in order that no root of resentment (rancor, bitterness, or hatred) shoots forth and causes trouble and bitter torment, and the many become contaminated and defiled by it

The Message says: 'Keep a sharp eye out for weeds of bitter discontent. A thistle or two gone to seed can ruin a whole garden in no time.'

Bitterness, roots, or weeds of bitterness can cause toxicity and destruction. Destruction in the person's life who is bitter; and the destruction and ruin of those around them that the weeds choke.

Roots of bitterness need to be dealt with.

In my garden I have had many thorn bushes growing. At times I have cut back the brambles thinking I have dealt with them, only to find six weeks later that have taken over again.

I rushed the job in cutting them down, when really I should have taken the time to dig them out, roots, and all.

Many times we deal with bitterness, resentment, hatred, rejection similarly on a superficial level. We need to get to the root and pull them out once and for all.

Be aware toxic roots will destroy your life. Toxic root systems in others, making them toxic people also will strangle your growth and fruit. Left alone, the toxic, the bitter will spread, will contaminate a whole church.

Let's not ignore but deal with toxic, bitter roots.

If you are upset or angry, deal with it. Talk with person and sort out. Talk to God and forgive, but just don't let a root system of bitterness spring up or be established.

Prayer:

Father I want to deal with bitter roots in my life. Holy Spirit show me where they are. Help me to dig them up once and for all. Keep me from toxic people that would contaminate and suffocate me today in Jesus' name amen.
